Stephen Earle is an American rock, country and folk singer-songwriter, record producer, author, and actor. Who most people only know him from his number one hit. Copperhead Road. But there is a lot more to him than that. There are songwriters and then there are storytellers, and Steve Earle is very much the latter. His songs, such as “The Devil’s Right Hand,” “Copperhead Road” and “Guitar Town,” have been sung by Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Vince Gill, Patty Loveless and many, many more. Earle began his career as a songwriter in Nashville and released his first EP in 1982. First as working blue-collar jobs during the day in Nashville; at night, he wrote songs and played bass in Guy Clark’s backing band, appearing on a cut on Clark’s 1975 album Old No. 1. Guy became his friend and teacher. He stayed in Nashville for several years, making connections within the industry and eventually landing a job as a staff writer for the publisher Sunbury Dunbar.
Steve is paying homage to his songwriting mentor and longtime friend, the legendary Guy Clark, with his latest album GUY.
Steve Earle & The Dukes Summer 2019 Tour Dates is in dedication to his friend Guy Clark. in support of their critically acclaimed new album GUY. A return to New West Records, the 16-song set is comprised of songs written by one of his two primary songwriting mentors, the legendary Guy Clark. The New Yorker called GUY “a winsome tribute” while Stereogum called the album “…a truly sublime homage.”
Produced by Earle and recorded by his longtime production partner Ray Kennedy, GUY features his latest, and possibly best, incarnation of his backing band The Dukes including Kelley Looney on bass, Chris Masterson on guitar, Eleanor Whitmore on fiddle & mandolin, Ricky Ray Jackson on pedal steel guitar, and Brad Pemberton on drums & percussion.
Steve Earle’s new album “Guy” pays tribute to one of his songwriting mentors, the late Guy Clark, who died in 2016.
The show was July 24, 2019, at the Metropolitan Theatre in Morgantown, WV. Opening for him was his special guests The Mastersons. Who are members of his band.
Steve played many of his hits, but the show was in memory of
Guy Clark. And that what the show focus on. With Steve telling many funny stories of him and Guy. It was a joy to hear his stories, on the man they called Guy.
