Guided by Maryon’s exquisitely soulful vocals, “Boys Will Be Boys” is a playful yet empowering pop anthem that gives a middle finger to all the womanizing men out there. “It’s about the fickle nature of modern relationships – or ‘situationships’ – where the person you thought cared about you only wants you for your body,” Maryon elaborates. The single has already been making waves on TikTok – amassing over 1M+ views – after she started posting clips last month.
What was your upbringing like?
I was born in Moldova, grew up in Italy, and moved to London when I was 18. My upbringing was full of ups and downs since music was not a path my parents were comfortable with me pursuing. One thing I’ve learnt though is that it is important to chase your dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem.
How did you first discover your love for music?
I first discovered my love for music when I saw Madonna perform “Hung Up” on MTV.
Tell us about how you decided to switch from a language degree to a music degree while at university? How did your parents react?
Truth be told, I dropped out of studying languages on the first day. I never wanted to do language, that was just the path my parents wanted me to pursue. I always wanted to do music.
Do you play any instruments?
I play the guitar and some piano. I usually come up with melodies in a session first and then lyrics come secondly
What was your first performance like?
My first performance was when I was in high school. I was 16 and I was very nervous because my mum and uncle were outside the venue.
How would you describe your music?
I would say my music is left-of-center pop. It’s a mixture of Lorde, Madonna, Jessie Ware, and Florence and the Machine.
In your opinion, what makes a good songwriter?
Honesty, having no filter, and heartfelt lyricism will always make good songwriting.
What was the title of your first original song? Did you record it?
My first original song is a song called “You” and it’s actually the first song I released on Spotify. I came up with the chords and lyrics on guitar. Then, I joined a music group on Facebook and connected with a producer in Toronto who produced the whole track for me. My music career really started when I released that song.
What is your songwriting process like?
I usually come up with melodies first. I find that melodies tend to dictate the whole vibe of the song. I usually write songs based on personal experiences. I like to get personal and emotional when I write songs.
Tell us about your new single “Boys Will Be Boys.”
“Boys Will Be Boys” is a female-empowerment anthem about fuckboys. I wanted it to be an empowering song you can scream in your car or wherever you are. It is about those situation ships that you get stuck in when you’re first dating something and you don’t know where it’s going.
Are you going to release a music video for the song?
I will be releasing an acoustic heartbreak version of the song in a week.
Do you have an album or EP in the near future? Tell us about it.
I am planning to release my EP early next year. The first single is called “Back to Strangers” and it will be coming out soon!
What song from the past has been stuck in your head lately? Moreover, what does that song mean to you?
“Are You Mine” by Arctic Monkeys is my current favorite song. It makes me feel empowered, free and excited about life.
Have you discovered or rediscovered any hobbies lately?
Yes, I’ve recently been traveling a lot again and realized how much I enjoy exploring different cultures.
How was it to open up for BEKA in the UK?
It was a thrilling experience! It was amazing to share the stage with someone who I look up to.
What/where is your happy place?
My happy place is songwriting in the studio. I love exploring and expressing the ideas and thoughts I have in my head. I find it therapeutic to be able to share my internal feelings and I hope others can find common ground and solace in my lyrics.
