Dan Locke: How did you pick your name?
NAE: Well, my legal name is Renee, Nae is the short version. I always dreamt about having a slightly different stage name, but I wanted to stay close enough to home. I’ve been called Nae or Nae Nae since I was old enough to remember.
What was your influences growing up?
I loved Miley Cyrus growing up. I don’t know if it’s more so because everyone told me I look and sing like her or because of her music. I don’t admire her as much as I used to. Either way, she definitely inspired me to chase my dreams at a young age.
How did you start performing music?
I started performing music when I was 13 at a small Christian school in Clearwater, Fl. I grew up in a religious environment and started performing worship music for our chapel sessions at the school and one evening for the youth service. A couple years later we had the privilege of performing during the church’s Christmas cantata.
Tell me about your first performance?
My first performance was a solo performance with a pianist. It took place in a cabin retreat in Bryson City, North Carolina. I sang the song Plead for Me by Sovereign Grace Music. I remember being anxious before walking on stage and my nerves going away as soon as I got up there. It was an amazing experience, probably the experience that made me really want to perform my own music on stage.
How do you define your music?
My music is extremely sincere, captivating, and energetic. It’s sincere in the fact that I write the music myself straight from the heart. My producers always do an amazing job at making the music as captivating and memorable as possible. I can’t promise I won’t switch it up without notice. Watch out.
Is synth pop the same as new wave?
Yes, synth pop is a subcategory of new wave music!
How has your music developed over the years?
My first introduction to the musical world and hands on performances included Christian worship music solely. Since I started recording my own songs just over a year ago, I decided to stick with pop- a vibe that’s not just enjoyable to me but to so many others. My music is developing beautifully lyrically. The words are ever more pertinent each time a song is created.
What brings you happiness?
My happiness comes in many forms. For me, horses, quality time with my boyfriend, working out, writing music, and traveling can always put a genuine smile on my face!
You just released the video for 80’s Arcade. It looks like you were having fun recording it. How long did it take? Did you close down Replay Amusement Museum in order to make it?
We had so much fun recording it, oh my! Filming in total took somewhere between 10-12 hours. It was a whole day ordeal but we were shopping and planning out the script for weeks prior.
Are you planning to do any touring to support your new music?
Absolutely! My EPK is almost finished. I’ll be sending that around in hopes to get gigs and eventually start my own tour.
How do you see yourself in five years?
I see myself on a worldwide tour in five yours. No doubt about that! I plan to develop my sound more and more.
Anything in closing?
