MICHAEL SCHENKER FEST
Concord Music Hall
March 17 2018
by: Jake Warkel
Tonight here in Chicago IL at the (Sold Out) Concord Music Hall Michael Schenker, one of music’s greatest rock guitarists, will be taking the stage here shortly along with an all-star cast including the talents of vocalists Gary Barden, Graham Bonnet, Robin McAuley. The group also includes Steve Mann (guitar/keyboards), Ted McKenna drums), and Chris Glen (bass). Also Doogie White the current MICHAEL SCHENKER’S TEMPLE OF ROCK vocalist all of whom have jammed within the venerable MSG. We will hear some killer melodic hard rock with progressive undertones here tonight fore sure.
Michael Schenker takes the stage and starts out with “Into The Arena” which is just an amazing instrumental with
blistering guitar riffs. The crowd is wound up loving what they see, an energetic excited Michael Schenker looking stellar with his famed Dean V guitar. Rolling right into “Let Sleeping Dogs Lie” featuring Gary Barden on vocals for who was, of course, the original lead singer of MSG during the early 80s. The show was nothing thing short of excitement with Graham Bonnet, Robin McAuley, and Doggie White also having their moment taking the stage rotating in and out heading songs as well as all members on stage singing backups. The band looked so happy all the members just had fun with fans as well as us photographers and themselves. Chris Glenn by far is the most insane when interacting with people in the crowd and his fellow bandmates. Cheers Glen thanks for making me laugh all night.
Graham Bonnet still has his vocals, he was sounding just as good as he had in his younger years. That goes for Robin McAuley and Gary Barden as well, I’m so impressed how great they sounded. I was Just blown away and you cant forget the main drive of Chris
Glen, Steve Mann and Ted McKenna keeping the solid tight ship rocking. Michael Schenker was on his game and just was light out.
The setlist was a dream for Schenker fans who had songs from Scorps, UFO, MSG and McAuley/Schenker. Thirty songs was pretty intense for a setlist which I had no problem with but possibly could have cut an opening act if you plan on playing a long ass set since the show ended just before 1:00am.
For the fans that had left the show a little early had missed out on the last songs from their Encore which were all UFO songs “Doctor Doctor” “Shoot Shoot” “Natural Things” and of course “Lights Out” to complete the night. The Sold out crowd definitely received a killer show worth their money, you couldn’t have asked for any thing more than a Schenker show like the one that this crowd just had seen.
