How did you come up with the idea of an all mom- only band?
We met each other in 2015 at a local music school in Asbury Park, NJ, where our kids were taking classes. The idea of starting a “mom band” was a continuing joke, but we were encouraged to show up and try it out at the school’s adult sessions. Some of us played a few chords or sang in high school, but we were for the most part beginners – all thinking we missed that boat. After that night, we were hooked.
We dreamed of something more than the endless mom grind: piles of laundry and miles of errands. Those flashbacks of freedom and concerts before kids inspired and motivated us mamas to meet up once a week and form a mom band. We quickly realized what being a part of this band meant for us – we didn’t want to lose sight of who we are and who we once were. Another chapter is just beginning after kids and you can have (and want) more. The energy is fierce and the jokes are feisty but the beating heart of MAMADRAMA is living out a dream that is never too late!
How did the band get its name?
It came out naturally during practice. There is always “mama drama” being that we are full time working moms with kids, and lots going on!
What was your first performance like?
We came out strong and we’ve been loud and proud from the beginning. We’re not sure the audience was ready for us…but we wanted more of us! We got hooked and addicted to performing together on stage.
Describe your music.
We’re glam punk with a sprinkle of blues and metal.
Tell me about your new song Easy Target?
“Easy Target” addresses the concerns of women’s inequality with lyrics such as: 11I wanna make a declaration. 200 years to change this nation. One step forward, two steps back. Always picking up the slack…l’m an Easy Target.11
Easy Target was written pre-Covid and yet it still feels totally applicable now during this political climate. Although it was written to address the concerns of women’s inequality, it is quickly becoming an anthem for anyone feeling this way. Releasing it during the election season was important for us.
It has been two years since MILF (Moms in Leather Forever). Why so long?
We took time to regroup during the pandemic. Then we decided it was time to get back to the music. We added new band members and were quickly inspired to perform live and write songs again.
How so before we see an album?
We have the material and we’re working on recording another single soon. Our goal is 2023!
What are you feeling about streaming music?
It allows us to get our music out to more people and reach a bigger audience!
If “Video Killed the Radio Star” do you think that the Covid-19 virus has killed live music? Do you feel the Covid-19 virus is going to affect the music business in the future?
No, it didn’t kill live music, quite the contrary actually. We feel it fueled it and made people even more eager and hungry to go to a show. Nothing will ever replace the spontaneous nature of a live show.
Do you think that Covid-19 has been a plus to an artist career?
Depends on the artist. For us, there was a light pause and we realized how much we missed it. We came back with new motivation, new band members, and new music.
What is your happy place?
Onstage playing live together!
What is your feeling about TikTok? With Sony Music and Warner Music strucking an “expanded” global licensing agreement with Universal Music Group. Now that TikTok is now fully licensed by all three major record companies, will you start using TikTok more?
Totally, we’re on TikTok-follow us @mamadramaband!
Also, TikTok has launching TikTok Radio (ch. 4), a full-time SiriusXM music channel. The station will be available is vehicles and as a streaming channel on the SiriusXM App, desktop, and all connected devices.
The station will be part of a new TikTok collaboration with SiriusXM and its subsidiary, Pandora, to jointly promote emerging talent. Do you think this platform could became a force in the future of streaming music?
SiriusXm Music has a pretty strong brand, so both together could become even stronger.
They say create content content content. How does pre-save help with content
It helps promoting your music almost like you can pre-order a book, a way to gain more publicity, and get people excited about the upcoming release day.
Anything you would like to say in closing.
