It was a perfect September evening for an anniversary celebration at one of Chicago’s premier lakefront live music venues, Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island. The celebration was brought to order for the 30-year anniversaries of Stone Temple Pilot’s, “Purple” album, as well as LIVE’s album, “Throwing Copper.” The party did not disappoint as both bands, along with special guests Soul Asylum, provided an auditory and visual event like non-other, delivering an unforgettable night of 90s rock nostalgia, set against the backdrop of Lake Michigan and Chicago’s iconic city skyline, adding an atmospheric touch to an unforgettable evening.
Soul Asylum opened up the evening, warming the crowd with their signature mix of grunge-infused alt-rock. “Runaway Train” and “Misery” hit with emotional intensity, while frontman Dave Pirner’s gritty vocals capture the raw spirit of the band’s early days. Their set feels intimate yet electric, setting the stage perfectly for what’s to come. Their energy was palpable and beyond contagious. A true must see/hear!
Co-Headliner, Stone Temple Pilots elevated the energy with their signature heavy and dynamic performance. Jeff Gutt confidently channels the legacy of Scott Weiland, bringing new life to hits like “Plush” and “Vasoline.” The band’s chemistry is tight, and their sound filled the amphitheater, drawing the entire crowd into a high-energy, head-banging experience.
LIVE closed out the night with an emotionally charged set. Ed Kowalczyk’s voice is as powerful as ever, and the band’s renditions of “Lightning Crashes” and “I Alone” left the crowd in awe. Their set tapped into deep nostalgia, truly celebrating their anniversary experience with soaring vocals and layered instrumentals that echoed across the amphitheater and the entire south side of Chicago, carried by the light breeze off of Lake Michigan.
Overall, the mix of these three iconic bands at Northerly Island made for an unforgettable evening, blending heartfelt memories with timeless rock anthems, all set against the scenic beauty of Chicago’s lakeshore. See photo gallery (video) below:
