LATEST SINGLE “NEVER EVER” IS #1 MOST ADDED SONG IN THE BILLBOARD DANCE CLUB SONGS CHART LAST WEEK
Vocalist, Lisa Stansfield, is one of my all-time favorite singers of British Soul. Having been a big fan of her previous material, especially song, “Been Around The World”, I was not as impressed with her 8th new cd, “Deeper. Although, songs are also written by Stansfield and her longtime partner, Ian Devaney, this time the songs seem more commercial and “synthesized” than previous original material.
Instead of her voice standing out , in a more acoustic setting as before, her vocals seem a little too “mixed-down”, to stand out. Song melodies aren’t as strong as in previous cd’s either. In fact, no one song stands out.
However, Lisa’s voice sounds still soulful and strong. Perhaps the problem for some songwriters after awhile, when recording all original material, songs can start to all sound alike.
Rhythms on the cd are mostly up-tempo dance tracks with a few funkier ones mixed in, as in the song “Butterflies” My favorite songs, although not outstanding from this cd are “Ghetto Heaven” and “. “Twisted” , that have a slightly “Mo-town like , feel.
I hope to hear Lisa again, on an album with more variety of songwriters or classic R&B songs
