Izzy Thomas has received acclaim from the likes of Billboard and Earmilk to name a few, as well as having supported artists such as Placebo and Bryan Adams.
Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Izzy Thomas, I’m an alternative pop/rock artist based in London.
In your own words tell me about your music?
It’s a cocktail of catchy chorus’s, mixed with dirty guitar riffs and electronic beats.
You were raised in Yorkshire. How was live music there as you were growing up?
There was always a rock scene there more than anything else. I actually used to be in a metal band! Loved jumping up and down and being an angry kid ha!
How did you get your first guitar and do you still have it?
My dad bought my first guitar for me. I don’t still have it though! I sold it when I first moved to London and I was so skint! So, pawned it at a shop! I’ve got a new guitar now though, one that actually suits my style more now.
How did you discover music?
My dad played records by Queen, Bad Company, Free and Michael Jackson mainly, so it all started at home, hearing what my dad would listen to.
Tell me about the first performance?
My first gig I was pissed! It was a college gig; I was so nervous I just got terribly drunk! Thankfully I don’t have to do that anymore ha!
In the beginning you were into rock and started to mix hip hop artist tracks with your music. How did people see you as an artist during that time?
I think the fusion of genres helped me stand out as an artist, as you don’t really see a lot of girls doing it. I honestly love rock and hip hop for the aggression they both have.
You are about to go on tour with Marisa and the Moths. How did this happen?
This literally stemmed from a conversation in the girl’s loos with Marisa! I was at a gig she was playing, then we got talking in the loos about her tour. One of their your dates at the time was in my home city Hull, so I said if she liked my music, I’d like to support her. After that, I got a whole bloody tour with her band! This tour will honestly be so much fun.
“Mad” was just released. Tell me about it?
It’s a melodic scream at today’s emotionally unavailable society!
How do you feel about being an indie artist?
It’s hard sometimes, as you basically have to act like a label! Which is a LOT of work. I would like to be signed by the right label, however, it’s also good to have the freedom at this point.
How did your Team Izzy Thomas Campaign come along?
I needed money for recording! So, thought being independent, it was only sensible to call for the help of my fans.
What are the best perks you have done for your campaign?
I think the cover versions were the best perk.
You also have done campaigns for Autism Awareness. Why are you so compassioned about that subject?
Owe of my family members has Aspergers syndrome. They had such a hard childhood because of not being able to fit in, and being treat differently to other people their whole lives, I just want to educate people to help them understand, and be compassionate towards people who have any form of autism, or any disability.
How did you discover Nick Donnelly?
Nick Donnelly discovered me!
To date what do you feel is your most powerful song?
Nuclear. It’s a new song, and everything from the words to the riff is just completely bad ass!
What advice would you give upcoming artists?
BE YOURSELF. BE BOLD. BE PERSISTANT.
How do you see 2020?
As a new adventure.
Any plans for touring?
I go on tour with Marisa And The Moths in April! After that I’ll be doing some more gigs around the UK, and some festivals.
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
Still loving what I do, and signed.
Anything in closing you like to say?
I hope my music empowers people. I would really love nothing more.
