Liz from Dying Gorgeous Lies talks about her band.

Interview conducted January 02, 2018

By Daniel Locke

Unique, aggressive and at the same time feminine vocals combined with technically high ambitious songwriting produce an explosive mixture that is simply kicking ass – not only on record but especially live!

Power paired with 100% stage presence creates a toxic essence which generates an ominous seething in front of every stage that puts all metal heads under its spell. The audience as the crucial ingredient of this synthesis creates a supernatural reaction, which fuses the parting line between band and audience.

-NOW IT’S TIME TO STAND UP, NOW IT’S TIME TO SPEAK UP-

The high recognition value of Dying Gorgeous Lies is unconcealable: in September 2013 MASSACRE RECORDS signed the quintet and released their second studio album “First World Breakdown” on February 20th, 2015.

The constant presence on the nationwide stages and in the media draws increasing attention from bookers and organizers. As a consequence DGL was booked as support for various renowned bands, e.g. EQUILIBRIUM, OVER KILL or ARCH ENEMY and was signed by Alpha Omega Management. In 2015 the band played their first Western European Tour.

This path continued in 2016: DGL is official support for bands like DIRKSCHNEIDER (Germany shows), TESTAMENT (Italy) or SUICIDAL ANGELS (Estonia, Latvia and Russia). Furthermore they share the stage with bands such as WITHIN TEMPTATION, KREATOR and POWERWOLF.

The year 2017 starts with an extreme highlight for the 5 thrashers around vocalist Liz Gorgeous! In April/May DGL joins TESTAMENT, SEPULTURA and PRONG on their Northern America Tour and shows the American and Canadian metal heads what German metal is made of.

Unratedmagazine: Tell me about your background. How did you get interested in Music?

Liz: Well i grew up with music. Music played a huge role in my dad’s life, he listened to blues music and rock’n’roll and so I kind of grew into that. Dad also showed me my first chords on the guitar as a child.

Is Liz Gorgeous your real name?

No my birth name is different. It’s Lisa.

How did the band get its name?

The name comes from the expression „gorgeous lies“ which means the beautiful half-truths or excuses we get told to keep the horrific truths a secret. Things we get told by the government and the politicians to stay quiet and don’t fan a fire of revolution. The „dying“ means that these „gorgeous lies“ are about to burst into pieces.

What type of music did you grow up with? Plus give me some of the artist?

Dying Gorgeous Lies Liz

I personally grew up with the Blues and Rock’n’Roll music my dad was listening to when I was a child. Elvis, Rolling Stones, Bill Haley…
Later as I discovered my own taste in music I soon started liking bands like Linkin Park, Metallica, Machine Head, Slipknot and many more.

How is it to be a female fronted band in Germany?

As a young band it’s always difficult to increase your level of popularity. If it is more difficult or easier for a female fronted band I can’t say.

How is the music scene in Germany?

The German scene these days is difficult. More and more smaller or middle-size festivals die and only the big ones are still running. This fact doesn’t make things easier for smaller bands to increase their level of popularity.

What are some of your favorite clubs in Kulmbach?

Kulmbach is a small town, there are actually no clubs…

What are some of the some of the bands which Influences your music?

Musically we get influenced by bands we grew up with, like Metallica, Slipknot or Machine Head

Did you play any other instruments while growing up?

I started playing the violin and later I had guitar lessons too. But actually I am mainly a singer.

What was the first band you played with?

DGL is my first band

How were you discovered?

We actually applied at Massacre Records and they offered us a record deal.
Our booking agency Alpha Omega Management saw us when we supported OverKill in Rome and offered us a management deal.

Who is in the present band?

The present band is me on the vocals, Mashl J. (guitars), Just’in Sane (lead guitars), Buzz’D Joe (bass) and J.J. (drums)

Where does your music come from?

From the bottom of our heart 😉

What does the word thrash metal means to you?

Thrash Metal means no remorse, just kick ass music and lyrics

You played Russia. How was playing in Moscow?

Moscow and also St. Petersburg were just great to play. The audience was incredibly awesome and we had a hell of a time to thrash the East. And now we can’t wait to return to these beautiful cities in February 2018.

In 2017 you did your first North America tour with Testament, Sepultura, Prong. How was it? Any stories you have for me?

Well as a European spending nights in motels is nothing special… anway we learned that that’s no good idea in the States. Apart from that this tour was amazing. The venues were fun to play, the audience loved our music and we got to know a different metal scene.

Tell me about playing in Chicago?

Playing in Chicago was an experience we almost would haved missed. On our way to the venue the van drove over a sharp piece of metal that slit open the left back tire. Only with help of the highway petrol we were able to continue our drive and arrived at the venue in time. The show itself was insane, we loved playing this phenomenal city.

During your tour you lost E. Burned. How were you able to replace him with Zakat! So fast?

Actually we didn’t lose E.Burned during the tour, we decided to go seperated ways a few months before the tour, so we had enough time to find a great successor with Zak Fat.

Any new music coming out this upcoming year?

Yes we are about to write the songs for the third record, more infos coming soon.

Any plans to tour?

Of course. We will return to Russia in February, supporting the mighty Destruction. Other shows and festivals are also confirmed, e.g. Metal Days in Slovenia.

I saw your rider. Very nice. I see you are having the club supply the backline. A lot of people don’t know what the backline is Can you explain that?

The rider is necessary to let the clubs know what we need to play. The backline includes for example the drum-kit, the boxes, amps and mics.

I also saw you are very sensible with what the club needs to supplies to the band at the club. We all have heard stories of unlimited wine and beer backstage. Special meal the list goes on. Any funny request you have heard about from any band which you tour with? You don’t have to say any names if you don’t want to.

A band we played with requested color-sorted M&Ms AND received them. We don’t have any special requests, we just ask for vegetarian food, cause experience showed us, that us 3 vegetarians often end up without any food if we don’t specifically ask for it.

What is you’re feeling about Vinyl?

If someone was listening to you for the first time, what 3 videos or songs would you tell them to look/listen to and why?

First World Breakdown
Beast Mode
No. 759

What direction do you see your music heading in the next 2 years and your long term goals of your music?

The music is getting faster and faster and harder and harder. In the sooner future we plan to release a new record and continue growing.

What music fests would you like to play in?

We would absolutely love to play Wacken Open Air and 70.000 tons of Metal.

Have you look into Rock on the Range?

I just checked up the line-up and it looks pretty awesome. Definitly a festival that is worth keeping an eye on.

Have you looked into SXSW?

Also just checked out. Seems like a big variety of artists from all over the world. Great event, will have a closer look soon.

Are you BMI or ASCAP?

None of them… in Germany we have GEMA that is something quite similar as it seems.

What is on you cell phone right now?

I have right now Halestorm and Skull Fist on my phone.

Any guilty pleasures your fans would be surprise you listen to?

You ask the right person… I personally listen to a big variety of music. BUT I also consider my taste in music as great… so no guilty pleasures, just great music 🙂

If you could pick any cartoon character who would it be and why?

I am a big MARVEL fan and like especially Thor and Iron Man

What music do you listens to relax?

Mostly Johnny Cash

Anything you like to close with?

Live long and prosper.
And may the force be with you 😉
