Interview conducted on June 28, 2022
By Dan Locke
Country and southern pop singer-songwriter Brei Carter recently released her 10th single “Paybacks” across all major digital music platforms, Today, the song’s new lyric video exclusively premiered by St. Louis Magazine, where she also chatted with renowned country music journalist Tricia Despres about her blossoming music career in Nashville, and her current home just outside of St. Louis.
The mid-tempo soulful country tune finds the Louisiana native and ambitious songstress doing what she does best; charming with her uplifting voice, authentic personality, and clever use of lyrics to tell stories. Even on a song which deals with the leftover feelings, emotions and memories from a relationship gone wrong, her listener is uplifted and left with a feeling that better days are ahead.
You are from Monroe, Louisiana. What is your upbringing?
“Yea I was born in Monroe and spent most of my upbringing in Louisiana. My upbringing was growing up in a single mother household surrounded by lots of family love. For a while when we moved back to Louisiana I lived with my grandparents. My Mother’s parents wanted us close to them. My upbringing was God, family and country. Summers consisted of vacation bible school, traveling to beaches, and hanging out with my cousins and climbing trees.”
Describe your music.
“I would say I’m country, with some soul, rock and gospel is also intertwined throughout my music. I’d say that some of it has an edge. My sound honestly is just different but the heart and root of it is country.”
Tell me about your 10th single new release “Paybacks” and how was it working with Jason Campbell and Terry Smith?
“Paybacks was great to write with Jason and Terry. They drove up to Nashville from Arkansas. When I walked in the room it was magical and I knew that we would come away with something special. Paybacks is just a friendly reminder that Karma is out there, so be kind to others, and treat them how you wanna be treated.”
Any new music coming out this summer?
I’m actually in the process of gathering all of my assets and making song selections to release my first album.
How was it to do Charley Pride’s ‘Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’?
“When it came down to recording ‘Kiss An Angel’ I was more excited than anything because I grew up with my dad singing that song to me. I wanted to take that song and put my creativity on it in hopes that Mister Charley Pride would love it so much that he’d want to do it with me. Unfortunately, he passed before I could get it out. However, I am honored though that his wonderful wife Mrs. Rozene Pride gave her blessing on the song, and I’m praying he and my dad are up in heaven proud of my version of such a great classic country hit.”
How was your first CMA Fest experience?
“CMA Fest was so surreal, and I’m honestly still on that cloud. It exceeded my imagination and everyone was so wonderful and kind. It was confirmation that I am doing what I’m called to do. Thank you to the CMA and the CMA Foundation for such a great opportunity and experience and I look forward to hopefully gracing one of those stages again!”
What is your happy place?
“I actually have a few happy places if that makes sense. My mom’s house, the church, being in or by the water, being in nature, living in the moment and the magic of music.
Have you discovered or rediscovered any new hobbies?
“I’ve been trying guitar for a while and hoping and praying that I can master it and I’ve always loved dancing. Lately I’ve been able to get back out on the dance floor and it feels like I’m a little girl all over again.”
Anything you would like to say in closing?
“I would like to say that I’m so fortunate and blessed that I get an opportunity to perform and share my music with the world. I’m looking forward to more opportunities to perform and to continue letting my light shine. Please follow, love, like, download my music, support and follow me and definitely request my music on the radio and book me.”
