Before Sunday is a band with a raw, energetic and personal attitude. Their sound blurs the lines between different genres, including pop, rock and alternative, revealing a rather eclectic approach to songwriting and a very impressive musicianship across the board.

The London combo has been pretty busy making new music as of late, and they recently released their brand new studio effort, “No Destination”, a well produced song with a lot of energy and grit, inspired by the edge of indie-rock and the jarring charisma of blues with an R&B twist.

Band Members Nik Basis, Stella P. , Kostas Gonidis

What is your musician up brings?

Nik: We want to believe that our music has some raw, energetic and personal attitude. Our sound blurs the lines between different genres including pop, rock, alternative, country filtered by a mainstream ‘listener’ point of view. We want to create interesting and enjoyable music that connects to the people. I think that we have a rather eclectic approach to song writing combined with good musicianship and we believe that our fans can recognise that.

How did you discover each other?

Before Sunday

Nik: After some long-time intense music projects, I wanted to start something new based on original music only. A mutual friend told me about Stella and we had our first meeting on a Saturday at midnight. The funny thing is that we had so many mutual friends and we played so many times on the same stages in Thessaloniki but we had never met each other till that moment. The rest is history… I’m glad that she decided to follow my ‘craziness’ about music in London and we’re still chasing our dreams since then. It’s amazing how much progress we’ve made since 2013 as individuals and as musicians.

I was friend with Kostas before I met Stella so I knew from the start that he is a great fit for Before Sunday.

Stella- Why is Pink your greatest inspiration?

Pink is an amazing musician and songwriter. Her songs are a combination of Rock and Pop music, they are powerful and mainstream. I’ve been to her shows and i believe that she is a true artist. She sings from her heart and she respects all the musicians she works with. They are like a family. Apart from that an artist needs to be an inspiration for the people. Her speech in VMAs 2017 about self-acceptance, embracing androgyny and her speech at PC Awards 2019 were incredible. She is an activist, fighter, feminist, an honest person and the most importantly she is an incredible mother. I can see a part of myself in her.

Stella- Why did you study Philosophy in college?

Stella: Since I can remember, music has always been my great passion but while growing up I found a great spiritual and intellectual depth into Philosophy and my University studies really helped me understand myself and the world around me in a whole new level. Eventually this is often reflected back to our lyrics and music.

What is Thessaloniki like for live music?

Nik: We live in London for the last 7 years so I’m not very ‘up to date’ with the situation but I can give you some info. Thessaloniki used to be a very ‘active’ meeting point for creative musicians representing all music genres. Rock, jazz, metal, acoustic, you used to have many choices for live music entertainment. Sadly the scene is not as ‘alive’ as it used to be. There is still plenty of talent around the city but there are not enough venues to support that anymore. The economical crisis was a judge step back culturally.

What is you’re feeling about Brexit. How will it help or hurt touring musicians?

We think that Brexit is one of the biggest disappointments in the UK. Some nasty politic games took place in order to conform public opinion and manipulate masses. We don’t believe we will see drastic changes at least in the short term regarding the music industry. We think that this applies to almost everything when we are talking about short term Brexit collateral damage. On the long run on the other hand we believe it will only add unnecessary bureaucratic drag to the touring processes that the only effect it has is to add up paperwork and take away from our creativity.

Kostas- Who is your favorite drummer and why?

Kostas: There are too many drummers I like to mention only one. But the one that inspired me the most as a kid was Bon Jovi’s drummer Tico Torres. I love the fact that he plays ‘for the song’ and never out of context.

Nik- Who is your favorite guitarist and why?

Nik: Tough question… If I have to choose one I would say David Gilmour. My sound and phrasing are much inspired by his guitar work with Pink Floyd and his solo albums. His passionate playing, intonation, emotion, melody, ‘breathing’ tone playing… So ‘simple’ and so amazing.

Stella- Who is your favorite singer and why?

After praising Pink that much it would have been at least silly of me not pick her name for this question!

How is the drinking in Thessaloniki?

Thessaloniki has some fantastic places for drinking, eating and socialising in general. From posh roof gardens, to live gigs, restaurants and small ‘secret’ pubs that only locals know. There is something for everyone.

Drink of Choice?

Tequila

Stella- Love your version of “Whole Lot of Love”. What is your feeling about Led Zeppelin’s copyright lawsuit dealing with Stairway to Heaven?

Stella: It’s not a surprize for me since I’m working in the music industry. I don’t agree with that but Stairway to heaven is not the only case. For example Tom Petty vs Sam Smith for “Stay with me”, Ed Sheeran vs Matt Cardle for “Photograph”. Sometimes it could be coincidental and sometimes it happens on purpose but that’s why law exists to solve situations like these hopefully with the most objective and fair outcome

Why did you guys do the Pokemon theme song?

Nik: I’m a huge fan of some of the well known theme songs from older cartoon series. Pokemon is one of them! So I thought it would be fun to made a cover of it. Plus it was a good way to keep us ‘busy’ with recordings and video making while we were preparing original songs.

Tell me about your latest release Anticipation?

Nik: Anticipation is the title of our ‘soon to be released’ debut album. We are very proud of what we achieved in over one year of song writing, recording and producing and we can’t wait to share this album with the world. We love every single word and note in there and every song is a part of ourselves and of our lives in London.

What is the release date?

Anticipation will be released worldwide in April of 2020 by Rockshots Records.

What has been your highest accolades?

Touring with Pavlov’s Dog in UK and Greece was definitely a fantastic experience. They are all great people and amazing musicians and we are very glad that we shared the stage with them. I would also say that playing in O2 Islington and being finalists on a couple of well popular music competitions in the UK are also some things to be proud of.  Our highest accolade is on the way though!

Would you like to win a Grammy?

Who wouldn’t…?

How do you see yourself in 5 years?

Stella: Active in music with two albums, lots of live gigs and teaching music to children.

Nik: With a couple of more albums ‘under our belt’, touring the world and still enjoying creating music.

Anything in closing?

Thanks a lot for the interview! Much appreciated! We hope to see you around in a live venue somewhere!
