Ailee is back
Interview conducted on December 12, 2019
by Dan Locke
Worldwide leading K-pop solo artist Ailee, debuted her first official English language music with the single “Sweater” on December 12, 2019 at 11:59pm, under Sun and Sky Records.
Ailee is most famously known for her powerful vocals, strong performances and chart topping songs, with one song, “I Will Come To You Like The First Snow”, becoming the most streamed song in K-Pop history, and breaking all K-Pop charts as the longest running #1 song on Korea’s music charts for months.
Dan Locke: You grow up in the United States. What were your influences while you were growing up?
Ailee: My earlier vocal influences were definitely Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey and eventually when I realized I loved to sing and dance while I perform, the ultimate divas Beyonce and Rihanna became my biggest inspirations as an artist.
How did you discover you wanted to be a performer?
I used to sing and dance in school talent shows and I absolutely loved it! Once I was on stage and doing what I loved the most, I knew that was what I wanted to be doing for the rest of my life.
What music did you listen to once you enter college?
I love music in general and I have different tastes in music every day! I love all genres which are probably why many of my music is so diverse in genre. Once I entered college I was probably listening to a lot of Pop and K-Pop songs by day and a lot of hip-hop and R&B by night.
Tell me about your appearance on the Maury Povich show?
I was invited to compete in a competition on the Maury Povich show during my senior year in college. I remember one of the producers on the show had invited me after having watched one of my YouTube videos. I was young and just overjoyed with the opportunity itself but to win 2nd place by votes was truly an eye-opening experience and made me realize I wanted to touch more people through my music.
How did you get signed to Muzo Entertainment?
Funny story. One of my, now whom I consider one of my closest brothers, found a short video clip of me singing at church and contacted me through AIM(AOL Instant Messenger) a LONG time ago. He asked me if we can connect to make music together and I immediately thought he was a creep or a serial-killer so I blocked him. After that, I guess he realized he sounded and seemed creepy too, he sent a separate e-mail wishing me the best of luck in the future and mentioned he really wanted to just make some good music. I did some research on him and his crew before making my first visit to his studio in his basement and they have been my family since then! To this day they are family to me and have been tremendously supportive through all my endeavors.
Why did you start your YouTube channels- mzamyx3 and aileemusic?
My first YouTube Channel was created when I had no future planned about my music career. Once I realized I wanted to start a professional career in music I created a new account to symbolize the new beginning.
Why did you move to Korea?
I always loved listening to the beautiful melodies of Kpop. After deciding to sing professionally I wanted to challenge myself to create music in the country of my roots before any other music.
In your heart what was your first big hit?
Without a doubt my debut single ‘Heaven’. Although, I do have other songs that others might say did better on the charts, etc. but, ‘Heaven’ was the first song that got everyone’s attention!
Tell me about your time at the Grammys. And where do you keep your Mnet American Rising Star Award?
I had a great time performing at the pre-Grammy parties and receiving the Rising Star Award was a great honor. I still have this award on my shelf along with my other proud accomplishments!
How was it to perform with Brian McKnight at the Superstage Concert? Which was held at the Jamsil Arena in Seoul?
How many people get to say they sang with Brian McKnight??? I am, to this day, still very honored and it was truly a humbling experience. He is an amazing artist on and off the stage! The fact that he knows who I am is just a blessing!
Any plans for a US tour?
I hope so! Where do you need me??
Your new single “Sweater” comes out today. Do you feel it will outdo other, K-pop holiday music?
The competition of doing well on the charts is NOT the main goal for this new single. I honestly and truly just wanted to sing a seasonal song others can enjoy during the holiday season. Regardless of the results of the charting system, I was happy when 100 people liked my music during my YouTube days. That still applies! If I touch 1 person through this single. My goal is complete.
Are you ready for sweater weather?
Yes, but at the same time, I can’t wait for summer weather already. ha!
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully still creating music, inspiring others and performing on stage!
Anything you like to say to your fans?
It has been an exceptional 8 years! I enjoy each moment I get to share my music with all of you. Thank you so much for all your unconditional love and support!
