5RAND is a Melodic Death Metal band from Italy, female fronted with both clean and growling vocals, who plays a modern metal, distinguished by the combination of melody with heavy, aggressive riffing, which leads into a dark, disturbing and violent atmosphere, whose result may recall bands that range from Slipknot to Dark Tranquillity.

Dan Locke: How did your band form?

Julia Elenoir : Pierluigi founded the band a few years ago. In the beginning, the lineup wasn’t that stable: it’s only in early 2015 when Julia joined, and also Riccardo a few months later, that the band really came to life properly. We consider that to be the real founding moment, because that’s when everything started coming together: our music style, the lyrical concepts, etc.

Did you ever find out who Shaman was? The person who gives your guitarist Pierluigi Carocci your band name.

Nope, never saw or heard of him again. Maybe he went back to the spirit world…

What were your influences while you were growing up?

Growing up, we’d say the classics: Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer… now the names are slightly different and more recent though, like Slipknot, Gojira, Fear Factory.

Since you are from Rome Italy I am going to name other bands from Rome. I would like you to say something about each if you can.

Vanilla Sky -Definitely not the genre we listen to. We know the name because they’re a big act, but that’s it.

Spiritual Front – Interesting vibes, not really in our ballpark but they’ve put out some really cool music and they’ve got excellent video clips too.

Fabian Varesi – We’re familiar with his work in Theatres des Vampires. Good stuff indeed.

How well do people take Death Metal in Rome?

Probably death metal shows are the most attended of the average metal gigs that take place here. That’s not considering bigger bands who move thousands of fans.

The majority of people here tend to be a bit lazy in their musical taste and aren’t that eager to know new bands or genre contaminations. People mostly like what they already know.

Define Melodic Death music for me?

Heavy and fast rhythmics, melodic leads, growling vocals, softer choruses. This is the extra-basic structure, you can add whatever else you want to that to get your own version.

What was your first gig together like?

It was in some club in Nettuno, Pierluigi’s hometown. There was a lot of hype because he’s well known locally, but we delivered. It was quite fun as it always is, actually. We love playing live no matter what, that’s the main reason why we’re doing all of this.

 How does one tour Europe?

With a van, a lot of goodwill and patience, enthusiasm, lack of sleep and abundance of beer.

What would your dream tour be?

In the USA supporting Slipknot. That would be a huge responsibility, but so fun and useful to us.

How is your latest album Dark Mother doing in the marketplace?

Quite well, we must say. We’ve also printed vinyls for the first time and they’re selling incredibly well. We’re very proud of that and will definitely keep using this format that is strongly coming back on the market.

If one were to watch five of your videos which one should they watch and why?

We have exactly five videos, 2 from the new record and 3 from the first album. So you have to watch ‘em all without exclusions!

Why did you pick “Blind Addiction” as the unplugged song to play on Radio Terronia Rock?

It’s the one that was easier to adapt for an acoustic performance. It came out pretty good!

It reminded me of The Beatles “Dear Prudence”. Are you planning to do any other songs acoustically in the near future?

No, that was something done really at the last moment as a present for our friends of Radio Terronia. We’re happy with the result but won’t probably do anything like it in the near future or on a regular basis.

If you could pick a cover song to redo in your own way which song would it be?

Something non-metal to readapt. As an example, we love how Lacuna Coil have covered Enjoy the silence from Depeche Mode, eventually, we’d like to try a similar approach, but with a different song obviously.

How do you see yourself in five years?

With at least one more record out, maybe two, and hopefully as a bigger band and better individuals.

 Anything in closing?
