Before we begin, let’s get a couple of things out of the way. People like
to make fun of, take jabs at or otherwise express their displeasure and
great disagreement with Ancient Aliens. We see people express their
displeasure, most particularly with that meme featuring Giorgio A.
Tsoukalos that appears on Facebook every time someone wants to spout off
sarcastically, “Because, Aliens!” We cannot make fun of it, because the
very nice people that asked us to review season 11 are, well, so very
nice. With that in mind (and tongues firmly in our cheeks) our first
question is: is it a good documentary? It’s a very silky smooth
professional production. Almost too silky smooth. But then, I remember
“In Search Of” with Leonard Nimoy. It had a pleasant, matter of fact
grittiness to it. And both the music and Leonard’s riveting narration
were less sensationalist in tone than Ancient Aliens.
Quoting Aristotle; “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to
entertain a thought without accepting it.” We both agree to keep this in
mind as we watch and discuss it. We’re in agreement that “Earth Station
Egypt” seemed to be about 20 minutes of vital information and padded out
to 90 minutes. There was a lot of filler and repetition in that one, and
it would have done better at 45 minutes. That being said, “Ancient
Aliens” does make very compelling arguments for the existence of
extraterrestrials, like in the episode “The Taken,” in which they bring
forth multiple eyewitnesses that were either abducted or encountered
UFOs at some point! There were so many that, that you eventually have
to give up and say, “Well there must be aliens visiting earth all the
time, then!”
Even if you were to ignore their arguments for the existence of ancient
aliens, they do take you to some very interesting places like Egypt or
the Polynesian Islands. We also enjoyed the variety of subjects ranging
from archaeological “wonders” to how will mankind interact with
artificial intelligence to mankind’s eventual colonization of Mars and
beyond. Without question, Ancient Aliens is thought-provoking. Where
does mythology end and reality begin? How did we REALLY get here? Where
are we headed in the future, and will artificial intelligence play a big
part in our evolution as a species—or our downfall? Adding weight to the
eyewitness testimony are the likes of William Shatner, putting in his
two cents on the subject, who admits to being an avid believer in life
other than humans in the universe. Another celebrity guest was Erich von
Daniken, who wrote the book “Chariots of the Gods”. Both of us found the
90-minute episode, “The Alien Phenomenon” to be the best of the lot.
Collectively speaking, we both give the 11th series three and a half
stars out of five.
